Why is it that we treat one person one way and another person another? In other words, why do we apply the law to each person around us in a different fashion? If our teenager with his or her learner's permit, for example, exceeds the speed limit while we are riding with them, we will object strenuously. When our friend does the same, we say nothing. Martin Luther recognized that we do this, and must do this. Otherwise the world would fall into chaos of one form or another. But how do we understand this? It all has to do with the concept of equity.
